While it may be a little departure from the Griffis Family Outdoors norm, I wanted to write a post to honor my wife and her sense of adventure that allows our family to explore the outdoors. While not growing up spending a lot of time in the outdoors (her first night in a tent was backpacking in New Mexico’s Columbine-Hondo Wilderness Study Area on our honeymoon) she continues to be up for any adventure. Thanks so much for enabling me, Jen!
For our anniversary trip we wanted a mountain bike destination with low elevation rides within a day’s drive. Quickly Bend rose to the top of the list. While the first and last days were primarily spent driving, we had two full days to explore.
Friday’s adventures included climbing at Smith Rock SP with Smith Rock Climbing Guides. We had a fantastic morning with our guide James showing us the lay of the land at this overwhelming area of more than 2,000 described routes. We followed this up with an afternoon of mountain biking on the Maston Rim Trails just outside of Redmond. The mellow, flowy trails were a great way to finish the afternoon.
Saturday we headed south to Newberry National Volcanic Monument. We hiked in the morning, mountain biked the Black Rock Trail and along the Deschutes River Trail before finishing the day with some more hiking.
The two of us had a fantastic time celebrating twenty years of life together!
